Amber Fort, JaipurPast PerfectThe imposing structure that is the Amber Fort dominates the skyline of Jaipur. This mammoth walled fortress took over 200 years to build. In 1952 Raja Man Singh I commenced the construction of the Amber Palace which was later completed by Raja Jai Singh and Sawai Jai Singh. Built mainly for the warring enemies as a safe place, the heavily structured walls could defend the residents within the ramparts of the fort. Though the primary aim of this refuge was to protect its residents, not a single stone was left unturned to make it a luxurious haven for the monarchs. Magic of Architecture Situated 11 km from the town of Jaipur, the Amber Fort sits in a picturesque setting amidst the rugged Aravali hills. Built atop a ridge and sprawled along the Maotha lake, the fort was once a protection for the city resplendent with its many palaces and temples. Every nook and cranny of this magnificent structure offers bird's eye views of the fascinating landscape. But do not get taken in by its rugged and forbidding exterior because within its mammoth stone walls it contains a beautiful fusion of art and architecture. Awe inspiring in proportion, the Amber Fort built of red sandstone and white marble is an aesthetic amalgamation of Hindu and Mughal architecture. The palace or the royal apartments that lie inside the massive Amber Fort complex are laden with gateways, gardens, arches, stairways, pillared pavilions, temples and magnificent durbars and halls. The fort is entered through the 'Dil-e-Aaram' Garden, laid out in the traditional Mughal style. An imposing flight of stairs leads to the 'Diwan-i-Aam' (hall of public audience) which has latticed galleries and double row of columns each having a capital in the shape of elephants on the top. To the right are steps that lead to the small Kali Temple. Maharaja Man Singh was a great devotee of Goddess Kali and prayed to the goddess for victory during battles. The temple has huge doors made of silver. The larger white marble Shila Mata temple, has the image of Goddess Kali, brought by Raja Man Singh from Jessore in East Bengal (now Bangladesh). The front courtyard of the complex, is adorned with the magnificent, pillared hall of the Diwan - i - Am, and the two - tiered painted gateway Ganesh Pol. The palace of mirrors, Sheesh Mahal, is of special interest. It has walls inlaid with exquisite mirrors. The Jas Mandir, perched on the upper floor, has exquisitely carved jali work and intricate mirror and stucco creations. Important facts Weather Watch Jaipur has an extreme climate, with the summers being hot and humid and winters chilly. The summer months (April to July) can see temperature rise upto 45 degree celsius. The winter months (October to March) are the best time to visit and experience the splendor of this majestic city. Soak in the Surroundings Admittedly the Amber Fort is one of the most imposing and fascinating structures in the Pink City. However this town has many more attractions, take your pick from the exquisite palaces, temples and memorials dotting its landscape. The list includes the Rambhag Palace, The City Palace, Bissau Palace, Samode, Sanganer, Gaitor, Jaigarh Fort, Jaimahal Palace, Jantar Mantar, Hawa Mahal Nahargarh Fort, Narain Niwas, Rajmahal palace and the Birla temple. How to Reach : Air : For those who would like to fly down, Indian Airlines, Jet Airways and Alliance Air keep Jaipur connected to all the major metros of India. Rail : Railway connectivity is also abundant with The Jaipur, Bikaner and Aravalli Express' ferrying people from most parts of India. Road : Jaipur is well connected by good motorable roads to all the major towns and cities. Shopping Spree The bazaars of Jaipur will enthrall you with their old world charm. It is one of the best markets for jewelery. Here silver is fashioned in authentic traditional designs reflecting the creativity and culture of the people. Gold jewelery inlaid with precious stones and emblazoned with intricate Meenakari work can be found at bargain prices. Handicrafts that the locals from surrounding villages bring in will also make memorable mementos. The main markets are along Jauhari Bazar, Bapu bazaar, Nehru bazaar, Chaura Rasta, Tripolia bazaar and M.I. Road. Shops specialising in precious and semi precious stones, ornaments and jewellery are to be found on and along Jauhari bazaar.
