Nahargarh Fort

Past Perfect
Nahargarh Fort, aged two hundred and fifty years has seen many generations of Ambers royalty and played a part in their struggles and celebrations. Built by Maharaja Jai Singh II in 1974, this massive fort was redesigned in the 19th century by Sawai Ram Singh II and Sawai Madho Singh II. Also known as the 'Tiger Fort' this dominating structure, with its unscalable red sandstone walls and bastions was built to bolster the defence of Amber. It was later turned into a monsoon retreat for the royalty and a venue where the king would entertain his guests and take out contingents of shooting parties. At one point it was also used to house the kings treasury.

This fort is mired in mystery and myth has it that the spirit of a desceased Rajput prince called Nahar would haunt the site and wreak havoc with the construction effort. A priest was called to negotiate with the spirit and the prince agreed to let the fort be constructed on the condition that it was to be named after him. Hence the fort got the intriguing name of Nahargarh.

Marvel of Architecture
A winding drive up through the hills and 6 kilometers from the main town of Jaipur, Nahargarh is perched atop a picturesque hill in the rugged Aravali range and looks down protectitevly over the city. Cannons perched across its ramparts to safeguard the city never had to be used since there was no threat of war, so in later years they were fired to signal the time to the city below. Parts of the fort are crumbling but the later additions by the Maharajas have been preserved diligently. It contains a cluster of twelve identical suites, with the one for the king at the very beginning itself. They are decorated with delicate frescos, have attatched European style toilets and kithchen hearths. Each of its windows offers a breathtaking view of the city veiled in pink.

Weather Watch
