Eklingi Temple - Udaipur

According to legend, the founder of the Mewar dynasty Bappa Rawal had a miraculous dream in which lord Shiva removed a problem that had been vexing the ruler day and night. Out of gratitude and reverence for the deity, Bappa Rawal decided to build a temple dedicated to the god and so the complex had its genesis, 24 km north of Udaipur. Since then this particular manifestation of Shiva, Eklingji, is regarded as the true ruler of the kingdom of Mewar and the kings are said to rule only under his patronage and guidance. The Sisodia clan believes Eklingji is their tutelary deity and they worship him as the ultimate reality, the supreme power and the wholesome one - Parabhrama.

Built in an area of about 2500 sq. feet and 65 feet in height, the Eklingji is a 15th century temple. A colossal wall protects the entire complex. The complex consists of 108 temples, coinciding with the number of beads in the rudraksh necklace, a holy rosary that Indian sadhus (ascetics) and religious hindus use for meditation. The extensive assembly room inside the shrine is raised on the profusely designed pillars as is the main gateway to the temple. The main entrance to the temple on the Western side welcomes visitors into a big hall resting on profusely carved pillars. In this hall, a beautiful silver image of Nandi has been displayed. Also known as 'Kailashpuri' the Eklingi temple houses the images of Lord Shiva and his entire family. Eklingji is a unique manifestation of Shiva, the multi faced lord carved out of black stone, is shown facing the four directions - he is Surya in the east, Brahma in the west, Vishnu in the north and Rudra in the south. In the center of these images is the Shivlinga, encircled by a silver snake. The temple shows lord Shiva with his family, Goddess Parvati and the elephant god Ganesh. The temple also houses many other Hindu deities like Yamuna, Saraswati, Ganeshji and Kalika.

Bells chime in this sacred and reverent atmosphere and the fragrance of incense such as sandalwood and dhoop seems to permeate and purify all those who visit here.

The complex houses 70 temples in all, apart from the main Shiva temple the smaller temples are dedicated to Ambamata, Kalka Mata and Ganesh in this complex. Some of the more famous temples are the Sas-Bahu marble temple, dating back to the 11th century, the Adbhudji Jain temple made of black marble and constructed in the 15th century. Other temples in Kailashpuri include those of Pataleshwar Mahadeo, Arbada Mata, Rathasan Devi and Vindhyavasini Devi.There is another temple called Nathon Ka Mandir housed here, it has inscriptions dating back to the 10th century but surprisingly enough no worship is offered here.

There are two tanks situated on the Northern side of the temple - Karz Kund and Tulsi Kund. Water from these tanks is utilized for temple services. The prayer service is performed in a very elaborate and authentic manner, using the Vedic and Tantric styles - beginning sharp at 4 in the morning. Shivratri is an important religious event here, on this day the image of the deity is decked with jewellery and large gatherings of devout hindus come here to offer prayers. It is a beautiful temple complex, with fine art work and delicate sculptures and of course a soothing spiritual atmosphere.

How to Reach :

By Air : Nearest airport is the Maharana Pratap airport located at a distance of 24 kms from the city of Udaipur. It is well connected to the cities of Delhi, Mumbai, Jaipur and Jodhpur.

By Train : Nearest railway station is in Udaipur, which is well connected to Delhi , Ahmadabad and most metro cities.

By Road : Udaipur is well connected to Jaipur, Agra, Delhi, Jodhpur, Ajmer, Nathdwara, Bikaner, Jaisalmer, and Bharatpur. It has good road links to all these cities and some more.
