The Famous Golden TriangleThe historic cities of Delhi, Agra and Jaipur together form North India's famous golden triangle. They provide travelers a glimpse into India's majestic past and its splendid architectural treasures. Together they represent and unravel the mystique that is India. The elegant capital city Delhi, with its wide roads, stately gardens and tall buildings stands on the site of seven historical cities built by the visionary rulers over the centuries. Agra, the capital of the glorious Mughal Emperors, harbours the incomparable Taj Mahal, the exquisite marble monument that attarcts millions of visitors every year. Jaipur is the enigmatic pink city of the Maharajas, the city of Pomp and splendour, colour and festivity, of a rich and regal past that continues to this day.Though the cities are very different in character their histories have been interconnected bringing about a similarity in culture, tradition and lifestyle. Under the grand Mughals , the three cities, Delhi , Jaipur and Agar were linked through political alliances and cultural interchange. Architecture, arts and crafts were influenced by the mingling of Hindu and Muslim traditions and the result was a unique synthesis, which was reflected in the literary life and performing arts of the cities. With the establishment of the British Raj these three centres were absorbed within the fold of the empire, and their colourful histories took a new turn into the future. Located at motorable distance these cities are easily accessible and a must see for every tourist. Delhi Delhi has a fascinating historic, cultural and architectural heritage. It has remained the imperial capital for over a 1000 years and has seen many foreign conquerors and immigrants become a part of its rich cultural tapestry. King after successive king added to its monuments and most of these wonderful creations are either house of gods or houses of kings. Start your tour with the Red Fort and witness the extensive use of marble, pietra dura work, gilded pillars and delicate carvings on every possible surface. The palaces within the forts are beautiful constructions of red sandstone decorated with marble canopies and filigrees. The Jama Masjid, is the largest mosque in India. Of huge proportions it is a serene presence amidst the noisy - busy streets of Chandni Chowk. The Raj Ghat is a huge draw for tourists and locals alike, it houses the memorial of Mahatma Gandhi and is a steady reminder of the power of peace. Most monuments in delhi are an ode to the almighty Mughals who centuries ago tamed this harsh terrain and made it into their stronghold, but New Delhi was built by and carries the stamp of the imperial British rulers, their legacy to India. The India Gate is a 140 ft high 'Arch of Triump', built to commemorate the soldiers killed in WWI and the North Western Frontier. The Rashtrapati Bhavan (Viceroy's house) and the the Secretariat Buildings reflect a classical Roman style of Architecture. Delhi is littered with the most incredible monuments, the important ones on every visitors must see list include, Humayun's Tomb, Qutab Minar, Purana Quila (Old Fort), Safdarjung's Tomb, Nizamuddin Dargha and Jantar Mantar. Agra If Delhi was the seat of power, Agra was the city where the Mughals played out their loves and passions. It is a living image of their refinement, their love of nature and their devotion to the aesthetic. Among all that the Mughals left behind, the Taj Mahal remains their most enduring legacy. Crafted to perfection it sits on the banks of river Yamuna a short walk away from the mammoth Agra Fort. This red sandstone fort is another beauty, added to by three Mughal emperors it is abundant in palaces, moats, gardens, halls and even dundgeons. Neraby lies Akbar's deserted city, Fatehpur Sikri. It is said that this city's design was supervised by Akbar himself and seeing as how creative and playful the layout is, it may just have been. This city is full of surprises, at every turn is a charming garden, courtyards, domes, balconies, terraces, gardends, elegant cupolas, tanks, pools and baths. Jaipur Jaipur is the land of pink and cream, of valour, passion and romance. Ruled for centuries by the Rajput warrior kings, it has a colourful, all-consuming culture that will ensnare you in its charm and have you wide eyed with wonder the entire time you are there. Also called the 'Pink City', most of its buildings are made of sandstone and painted over with the traditional terecotta red. The Amber Fort dominates its skyline and is an imposing structure, stunningly situated on a hilltop and overlooking the Maota lake. It's impenetrable walls and bastions portray the strength of its erstwhile rulers. The City Palace, is very much a living monument as it still houses the present royalty. Its architecture is a beautiful blend of Rajput and Mughal styles of construction. The palace contains some of the most beautiful period rooms, magnificent halls, giant courtyards and landscaped gardens. A part of the palace has been converted into a museum and it displays incomparable memorabilia belonging to the kings and queens. The Hawa Mahal, with its lattices screen like facade is another major attraction in this town and of course the Jantar Mantar or the kings observatory is something you wouldn't want to miss.
